The village of Silica is located in the Košice region, in the Rožňava district, 22 kilometers distant from the district town. The fi rst written mention of the village dates back to 1376 under the name Szedlych. In 1399, the village was the property of István Szalonnai. The original population made a living from agriculture and forestry, but crafts such as joiner, carpenter, carver, mason, basket maker, beekeeper and similar were not rare either. Burning of lime or coal was also among the disappeared crafts. The village lies at 549 m.a.s.l. and is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Silicka plain and the Gemersko-Turniansky karst geological complex. The village is an important crossroads of tourist routes that lead through the aforementioned Slovak Karst National Park.
